Leo Niemczyk has been appointed as the new Chief of Police for Port St. Lucie, following a swearing-in ceremony held today. Niemczyk, who previously served as Assistant Chief since November 2023, steps into the role following the election of former Chief Richard Del Toro as St. Lucie County Sheriff.

Mayor Shannon Martin praised Niemczyk's leadership and experience, stating, “Chief Niemczyk is an exceptional law enforcement leader with a proven track record of success in public safety.” Martin emphasized his understanding of the city and his focus on community policing and crime prevention strategies.

City Manager Jesus Merejo also expressed confidence in Niemczyk’s capabilities, noting his leadership qualities and commitment to innovative law enforcement strategies. “He will continue to build on PSLPD’s success with a vision for the future that focuses first on the community,” Merejo said.

Niemczyk's career in law enforcement spans nearly three decades, beginning with the New York City Police Department (NYPD) in 1996. He joined the Port St. Lucie Police Department (PSLPD) in October 2002 and has since taken on various roles within the department. His initiatives include founding several programs such as the Peer Support Team and Critical Incident Stress Management program.

During his tenure at NYPD, he responded to significant events like September 11th and was recognized for his service. In Port St. Lucie, he became known for implementing new programs that enhanced departmental capabilities.

Niemczyk holds degrees from both the State University of New York and Barry University, along with completing advanced training at the Southern Police Institute Administrative Officer's Course at the University of Louisville.

Expressing gratitude for his new role, Niemczyk stated: “It is a privilege to work with our team of dedicated law enforcement professionals, who spend every day working to ensure the safety of our residents.”
