The City of Port St. Lucie has temporarily ceased the addition of fluoride to its water supply, affecting 95,000 customers. This decision comes after Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo raised concerns about potential health risks linked to fluoride exposure, citing recent medical studies.
A county ordinance from 1989 requires utility systems in St. Lucie County to fluoridate their water. However, the county attorney advised against enforcing this mandate currently due to the concerns highlighted by the Surgeon General.
Kevin Matyjaszek, Director of the Port St. Lucie Utility Systems Department, stated, "Our top priority is to provide our customers with the safest and highest-quality product possible." He added that given the recent concerns, halting fluoride addition was deemed in the best interest of customers until further information is available.
The city will continue evaluating the situation and any new data or recommendations that arise. City staff plan to collaborate with both the City Council and St. Lucie County officials regarding the ordinance and future actions.
