The Port St. Lucie Utility Systems Department (USD) will temporarily modify its water disinfection process from August 20 to September 2, using only chlorine for disinfection. This annual procedure, known as "Free Chlorine conversion," involves removing ammonia from the treatment process and is standard practice recommended by the American Water Works Association to maintain high water quality.
During this period, customers may notice a slight chlorine taste or changes in color and odor of their water. To expedite the process, USD will also flush fire hydrants overnight between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., which may cause temporary cloudiness and discoloration in tap water.
These conditions are temporary and do not pose any health risks. The water remains safe to drink. However, individuals on kidney dialysis should consult their physicians for special instructions, and those with tropical fish or aquatic animals should seek advice from a tropical fish store before adding water to aquariums.
For those sensitive to the taste of chlorine, it is recommended to keep an open container of drinking water in the refrigerator for a few hours to allow the chlorine taste to dissipate.
Customers with questions or concerns can contact USD via email at utility@cityofpsl.com, call (772) 873-6400, or visit CityofPSL.com/Water for more information.
