Joe Venturo, a dedicated volunteer at The Saints Golf Course in Port St. Lucie, shared his passion for serving the community, stating, “It’s fulfilling. I love golf. I love being around it. It’s a great atmosphere. There’s camaraderie and it gives you a good feeling of accomplishment.”

According to Human Resources Generalist Delfina Perera, the 413 volunteers who generously donate their time to various departments in the City of Port St. Lucie contributed over 53,000 hours during Fiscal Year 2022/23, saving the City more than $1.7 million in wages and benefits, which she described as "an incredible number."

Alyssa Figur, Recruitment Manager for Human Resources, expressed gratitude for the volunteers, emphasizing their importance by stating, “We’re so grateful for them.” She highlighted that volunteers play a crucial role in enhancing current staffing and saving the City time and money.

Venturo, who transitioned from a 23-year career with the City to volunteering, underscored the significance of showing up and taking the role seriously, saying, “It’s very important as a volunteer to show up. It’s still a shift.”

The City of Port St. Lucie recognizes April as National Volunteer Month, a time to appreciate the selfless dedication of individuals who contribute their time and talents to benefit the community. Recruitment Manager Figur noted that many volunteers, including retirees, seek opportunities to stay active and involved, contributing their skills and experience to various programs and events within the City.

Venturo, who joined The Saints Golf Course as a volunteer four years ago, highlighted the welcoming atmosphere and flexible hours that come with volunteering. He also mentioned the appreciation shown by The Saints management through appreciation luncheons held to honor volunteers and their contributions.

Despite the incentive of a free round of golf for every shift, Venturo humorously admitted that his golf game has not improved over the years, joking, “I’ve been playing for about 40 years, and I still stink, but it makes the job easier.”

The volunteers in Port St. Lucie play a vital role in supporting the community and enhancing the quality of life for residents. For those interested in becoming a volunteer with the City, more information can be found at www.cityofpsl.com/volunteer.
