St. Lucie County issued the following announcement on Jan. 28.

The Infrastructure Sales Tax Committee recently presented its 2021 Annual Report to the Board of County Commissioners, providing details on how the county’s Public Works staff completed more than $7.2 million in projects during the past fiscal year.

In 2018, St. Lucie County voters approved a half-cent sales tax increase in St. Lucie County to provide the Board of County Commissioners, along with the cities of Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie, with additional revenue over the next 10 years to pay for infrastructure projects that focus on Better Roads, More Sidewalks and Cleaner Rivers.

In the third year of this 10-year plan, St. Lucie County’s Public Works staff completed the following:

  • Road Resurfacing and Safety Projects (totaling more than $2.4 million)
    • Easy Street
    • SE Festivo Court
    • Gordy Road
    • Midway Road
    • Glades Cut Off Road
    • Orange Avenue Guardrail
•  Engineering Projects (totaling more $3.4 million)

  • Gordy Road Bridge Replacement
  • Floyd Johnston Road Culvert Replacement at Canal 31 & 44
• Water Quality Projects (totaling more $1.1 million)

  • Orange Avenue at Jenkins Road
  • 25th Street at Juanita Avenue
  • U.S. 1 at 25th Street
  • U.S. 1 at St. Lucie Boulevard
  • Eight additional reserve cameras
Members of the Infrastructure Sales Tax Committee presented the report to the Board of County Commissioners at its regular meeting on Jan. 25, citing that the committee was pleased with the progress that staff has made completing projects identified on the original list. Members of the committee did stress to the County Commissioners that additional staff should be considered to help managed the additional revenue being provided to local governments through the federal infrastructure program.

Along with additional federal funding, St. Lucie County’s half-cent sales tax generated roughly $11 million last year; $2 million more than originally anticipated.
