The City of Port St. Lucie has announced a public meeting set for April 23, inviting residents to learn about the Hogpen Slough stormwater treatment area project. The meeting will take place at City Hall Council Chambers, between 5 and 7 p.m.
The session aims to update the community on the progress of the Hogpen Slough project, discuss upcoming steps, and introduce the project team to the public. Design work for this stormwater treatment area (STA) is ongoing, with phases of design and permitting anticipated to reach completion by fall 2025. Construction is expected to begin in early 2026.
"Stormwater treatment areas are constructed wetlands designed to filter nutrients by promoting plant growth and the formation of peat soil. Besides helping with flood protection, their primary function is to remove phosphorus from urban and agricultural runoff before it flows into the North Fork of the St. Lucie River."
The Hogpen Slough STA will chiefly handle runoff from various areas including Savanna Preserve State Park, Savannah Club, and Spanish Lakes Golf Village. It is situated north of Walton Road and west of Lennard Road.
