Free tax assistance offered in St. Lucie County starting February

Trained volunteers from the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and AARP will be offering free tax preparation services in St. Lucie County starting in February. The service is available at five locations throughout the county.

VITA provides free tax filing assistance to residents with an annual income of $67,000 or less. Volunteers certified by the IRS offer basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing for eligible individuals. AARP's assistance focuses on low- to moderate-income taxpayers, particularly those aged 60 and above, though they do not exclude anyone based on age.

Residents seeking assistance should bring necessary documents such as proof of identification, Social Security numbers, birth dates of family members, property tax bills, all income documents including W-2s and 1099-R forms from employers, interest and dividend statements (forms 1099-Div), last year’s federal and state returns if available, health care expenses, donation receipts, and bank routing numbers for direct deposit.

All volunteers have received training from the Internal Revenue Service. At walk-in locations, help is provided on a first-come; first-served basis.

For additional IRS support, residents can contact the IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center located at 7410 S U.S. 1 in Port St. Lucie or call 772-340-5606.
