The Port St. Lucie Utility Systems Department has been awarded full accreditation by the American Public Works Association (APWA). This recognition was officially announced at the Port St. Lucie City Council Meeting on December 2. The accreditation confirms that the department complies with APWA's recommended management practices.
Accreditation is available to all governmental agencies responsible for utility and public works functions. The initial accreditation lasts four years, during which semi-annual updates are necessary to maintain compliance. After this period, a re-accreditation process encourages ongoing improvement and adherence to new practices.
The City's Utility Systems Department achieved 99% compliance with applicable standards. Among the 23,000 municipalities in North America, only 170 have received APWA accreditation. In Florida, Port St. Lucie is one of 21 accredited organizations and one of five cities or counties with more than one department accredited by APWA.
The goal of accreditation is to enhance excellence in managing utility/public works agencies, their programs, and employees. It aims to assist these agencies in improving operations and management while providing an objective evaluation of agency programs for public service.
"Accreditation from the APWA aligns with the Utility Systems Department’s mission to lead the water and wastewater utility industry as we focus on environmental stewardship," stated Utility Systems Director Kevin Matyjaszek. He acknowledged the department's 332 employees for their dedication to providing exceptional customer support and ensuring community health and safety.
