The Port St. Lucie Police Department has been awarded a $200,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to enhance mental health support for its officers. The funding is part of the Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act (LEMHWA) grant program and will be distributed over two years.
This initiative comes as part of the department's ongoing efforts to address the mental health needs of its officers and civilian staff in one of Florida's rapidly growing communities. The funds will facilitate the appointment of a clinical director, a licensed mental health professional with expertise in trauma-informed care and crisis intervention.
The appointed Clinical Director will play a key role in training and coaching the department’s peer support team, coordinating with external resources, monitoring officer exposure to stressors, and facilitating critical incident debriefs. This position aims to provide both sworn officers and civilian personnel with easier access to mental health services.
The police department is also focusing on strengthening its peer support team, which consists of 12 active members who offer round-the-clock assistance during crises. The team members are set to receive advanced training at the National Association of Peer Supporters (NAPS) annual conference among other specialized opportunities.
