In response to the expected drop in temperatures on the Treasure Coast, St. Lucie County and the City of Fort Pierce have partnered with In the Image of Christ to open an emergency cold weather shelter. The shelter, located at the Percy Peek Gym on Ave. D, will be operational from December 30 to January 1.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are expected to reach the low 40s with strong winds, resulting in wind chills in the upper 30s. To ensure the safety and well-being of individuals affected by the cold weather, the shelter will be open from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily. If the temperature or wind chill remains at 48 degrees or below, the shelter will remain open throughout the day.
Transportation to the shelter will be provided by Area Regional Transit (ART). Fixed routes will be running as usual, and circular pick-ups will be available at Pinewood Park and the Kilmer Branch Library between 3 and 4 p.m. from Friday to Sunday.
Pastor Hazel Hoylman, affiliated with In the Image of Christ, can be contacted at 772-359-9653 for more information regarding the emergency cold weather shelter at Percy Peek Gym.
In addition to providing shelter for humans, it is important to remember the safety of our furry friends. St. Lucie County's Animal Safety staff reminds residents to bring their pets inside overnight. Leaving pets tethered outside unsupervised is illegal, regardless of the temperature.
Furthermore, it is advised to take precautions to protect plants from the extreme cold weather. Plants in containers can be moved inside or placed near the house on porches or in garages. Large containers that cannot be moved inside can be clustered together, and mulch can be used to insulate the roots. Covering plants with cloth sheets, quilts, or commercial frost cloth can also prevent frost damage. It is crucial to ensure that the covering touches as little foliage as possible and extends all the way to the ground to trap radiant heat from the soil.
As the cold weather approaches, it is essential for residents to be prepared and take necessary steps to ensure their safety and the well-being of their pets and plants. The emergency cold weather shelter provides a crucial resource for those in need during this challenging time.
