In Fort Pierce, an emergency cold weather shelter will be available at the Percy Peek Gym on January 23 and 24. This initiative is a collaboration between St. Lucie County, the City of Fort Pierce, and In the Image of Christ. The shelter aims to provide refuge as temperatures are expected to drop below 40 degrees for over four hours overnight on both days.

The National Weather Service has issued this forecast for the Treasure Coast, prompting the opening of the shelter. It will operate from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m., starting Thursday, January 23.

For those needing transportation to Percy Peek Gym, Area Regional Transit (ART) will offer free transport services from designated locations between 6 p.m. and approximately 8 p.m.

Pastor Hazel Hoylman with In the Image of Christ can be contacted at 772-359-9653 for more information regarding the shelter.

Additionally, residents are advised to bring pets indoors during these cold nights. St. Lucie County’s Animal Safety staff emphasizes that leaving pets tethered outside unsupervised is illegal regardless of temperature conditions.
