The City of Port St. Lucie has been recognized once again for its urban forestry efforts. For the 20th consecutive year, the city has received the Tree City USA Award. This accolade acknowledges cities for their effective management of urban forests and excellence in municipal tree programs. In addition, Port St. Lucie has earned the Tree City USA Growth Award for the 19th year in a row.
Furthermore, the city has achieved international recognition for the third consecutive year, being designated as one of only 170 Tree Cities of the World. This international distinction is a joint initiative by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Arbor Day Foundation.
“Tree City USA is a partnership between the Arbor Day Foundation, USDA Forest Service, and National Association of State Foresters, which recognizes cities committed to ensuring that urban forests and trees are properly maintained, sustainably managed and celebrated.”
“Tree Cities of the World is a collaboration between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Arbor Day Foundation.”
To qualify for the Tree Cities of the World designation, Port St. Lucie met five core standards. The City has been proactive in its tree-related initiatives, having planted over 75,000 trees through the Port St. Lucie Tree Challenge. Additionally, since 2004, around 14,000 trees have been distributed through the Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful Tree Giveaway program.
