As Independence Day nears, the City of Port St. Lucie is reminding residents of changes to waste collection schedules. Regular collections will occur from Monday, June 30 to Thursday, July 3. There will be no garbage collection on Friday, July 4 due to the landfill’s closure, with services resuming on Saturday, July 5.

In a new initiative aimed at respecting national symbols, Port St. Lucie has introduced a Flag Retirement Box Program. This program provides residents with an accessible way to retire worn and tattered U.S. flags properly. Flag retirement boxes have been placed at City Hall, Veterans Memorial Park, and MIDFLORIDA Event Center.

The Gulf Iraq Afghanistan Veterans Association donated these boxes, an organization founded by City Councilman David Pickett. The city will ensure that collected flags are given to local organizations for appropriate disposal.

One of these flag retirement boxes will be available during the Freedomfest event on Friday, July 4 from 5-9 p.m., located at the MIDFLORIDA Event Center at 9221 SE Event Center Place. Residents can deposit their worn-out flags at the Stay Informed table during the festival; thereafter, this box will remain in the Event Center’s lobby.

According to the United States Flag Code, when a flag “is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display,” it should be destroyed respectfully. This program underscores Port St. Lucie’s dedication to honoring national symbols and offering proper disposal methods for its community.

Further details about the flag retirement boxes can be found at cityofpsl.com/flags.
