As Independence Day nears, the City of Port St. Lucie has announced adjustments to waste collection schedules for the holiday week. From Monday, June 30 to Thursday, July 3, regular collection will proceed as planned. However, on Friday, July 4, there will be no garbage collection due to landfill closure. Services will resume on Saturday, July 5.
In other news, Port St. Lucie has been recognized as one of ten winners of the All-America City Award by the National Civic League. This award highlights the city’s efforts in engaging residents towards achieving environmental goals.
Earlier this year, communities nationwide submitted applications detailing their initiatives for community engagement and positive change. These were narrowed down to twenty finalists who traveled to Denver, Colorado for further evaluation. They presented their projects to a jury of civic leaders who selected ten winners including Port St. Lucie.
Once primarily a retirement community lacking basic infrastructure, Port St. Lucie is now noted for its rapid growth and innovative approach driven by residents’ input. The city has launched significant sustainability initiatives such as a large-scale septic-to-sewer conversion program and Naturally PSL which aims at preserving green spaces.
The city’s governance model includes resident participation in decision-making processes shaping its future development. Projects like McCarty Ranch filtration system treating six billion gallons of water annually and Conservation Corps are part of PSL’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Port St. Lucie’s dedication is also reflected in public engagement activities like regional climate partnerships and grassroots programs including cleanups and tree giveaways aimed at fostering a resilient future.
