As the holiday season approaches, the City of Port St. Lucie is reminding residents about changes to trash collection schedules following the holidays. The city is also encouraging residents to recycle more during this period, as household waste increases by over 25% between Thanksgiving and New Year’s.

A significant portion of this extra waste—such as cardboard, gift boxes, wrapping paper, greeting cards, magazines, and catalogs—can be recycled instead of being sent to landfills. The city urges residents to recycle these materials properly so they can be reused.

“Holiday recycling tip: When in doubt, throw it out—and keep the season merry and green!”

By following recycling guidelines, residents can help reduce landfill waste and support sustainability efforts in Port St. Lucie.

Port St. Lucie is a fully integrated community with high homeownership rates and a diverse population. More information about its history and demographics can be found on its official website. The city covers 121 square miles and has a population of approximately 260,000 people, making it one of Florida’s largest cities by land area.

The city operates under a council-manager form of government with a five-member elected council responsible for setting policy and appointing key officials. Details on governance are available at the official government page.
