The City of Port St. Lucie is set to adjust operations at its Convenient Drop-Off Center to better serve residents. Starting July 8, the center will operate Wednesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Notably, yard waste and construction materials will no longer be accepted, and residents are limited to three visits per month.
In addition, the Port St. Lucie Utility Systems Department will modify its water disinfection process from July 8-22 as part of an annual procedure aimed at maintaining water quality in compliance with federal and state regulations. This temporary change involves a “free chlorine conversion,” where ammonia is removed from the treatment process, and chlorine alone is used for disinfection.
The American Water Works Association recommends these periodic modifications as a precautionary measure to ensure high water quality standards. During this period, residents may notice changes in the taste, color, or odor of their tap water due to increased chlorine levels.
To expedite the distribution of fresh water throughout the city’s extensive network of over 1,400 miles of pipes, fire hydrants will be flushed during this two-week period. This may result in temporarily cloudy or discolored tap water lasting only a few hours.
While these changes do not pose health risks and the water remains safe for consumption, individuals on kidney dialysis should seek medical advice regarding special instructions. Those with tropical fish or aquatic animals are advised to consult with experts before adding new water to aquariums.
For those sensitive to chlorine taste, storing drinking water in an open container in the refrigerator can help dissipate it. Residents with questions or concerns can contact the Utility Systems Department via email at utility@cityofpsl.com or by calling 772-873-6400.
