Justin Williams, a high school basketball player born with Alpert syndrome, has been recognized for his determination and resilience both on and off the court. Alpert syndrome is a rare genetic condition in which the bones in the skull, face, and limbs are fused together before birth. According to Boston Children’s Hospital, this condition occurs in approximately one out of every 65,000 to 88,000 births.

Despite these challenges, Williams was determined to lead a normal life. His father, John Williams, who also played basketball in his youth, encouraged him to try the sport. Together they practiced shooting hoops despite Justin’s physical limitations.

“Justin has had to learn things his own way,” John told Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel. “I can teach somebody else where to put their hands when they shoot a basketball, but with him, it was like, ‘Hey, you’re going to have figure out what works for you.’ One thing he is not is a quitter and he stuck with it and figured it out.”

Williams joined Foundation Academy in Winter Garden as a player and quickly became an inspiration for his teammates and school community. In one game against Legacy Christian Academy, he scored 17 points including five three-point shots.

His perseverance attracted national attention when he received the Jersey Mike’s Naismith High School Basketball Courage Award in April. The school held a pep rally to celebrate his achievements.

In July, Williams was honored with the Bill Buchalter Spirit Award by the Orlando Sentinel. The award recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional spirit and resolve despite facing significant obstacles.

After sportswriter and Florida Sports Hall of Fame member Bill Buchalter passed away last year, his family established a scholarship associated with the Spirit Award named after him. Justin Williams became the first recipient of the Bill Buchalter Spirit Award Scholarship.
