The Humane Society of St. Lucie County (HSSLC) has announced the launch of its first summer camp, Pet Ed Summer Camp, aimed at children entering grades 3-8. The camp provides a hands-on opportunity to learn about animal care and advocacy through various activities. Sponsored by GL Homes, the week-long camp costs $50 per week and includes lunch and snacks.

Pet Ed Summer Camp offers an interactive experience for children, allowing them to engage in activities such as touring the shelter, meeting adoptable animals, creating pet toys, and observing dogs in the new Woof and Wag Agility Course. The program also involves reading to kittens and stocking the Pawsitive Pet Pantry.

Nukhet Hendricks, Executive Director of HSSLC, emphasized the importance of teaching compassion through this initiative: “Pet-Ed Summer Camp is about shaping future leaders who understand that compassion is a form of strength. We’re teaching children that how we treat the most vulnerable, especially animals, defines our humanity.”

The sponsorship from GL Homes has made it possible for local families to access this affordable camp. Shannon Glendinning, Director of Development at HSSLC, expressed gratitude: “We’re so grateful to GL Homes for helping us bring this dream to life. Their support means parents, kids, and pets all win this summer.”

Registration for the camp is available on the HSSLC website. As a non-profit organization dedicated to providing compassionate care for homeless animals and educating the community on responsible pet ownership, HSSLC continues its mission with this new initiative.
