Alex Pring, a sophomore at South Lake High School in Groveland, has gained recognition for his achievements both on and off the football field. Born without most of his right arm, Pring received national attention when he was presented with a 3D-printed robotic arm by actor Robert Downey Jr., known for portraying Tony Stark in the Iron Man films. The bionic limb was created by Limbitless Solutions, a company based at the University of Central Florida.
Pring plays linebacker for the South Lake Eagles and is known among teammates and coaches for his determination. “Alex doesn’t look at himself as handicapped,” said South Lake coach Brad Lord to Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel. “He looks at himself as someone who wants to start on this team. He makes up for what he’s missing with his brain and his desire. He’s got a can-do attitude every day. Alex doesn’t quit and walk away from anything.”
Earlier this year, Pring received the Orlando Sentinel’s Buchalter Spirit Award in recognition of his perseverance. On August 25, he was awarded a scholarship established by the Buchalter Family and administered by the Florida Sports Hall of Fame.
Pring cites UCF alumnus Shaquem Griffin—who was also born missing part of an arm—and Adam Sandler’s character Bobby Boucher from “The Waterboy” as inspirations.
Academically, Pring maintains a 4.25 GPA and is already enrolled in college courses with aspirations to become an aerospace engineer.
“My parents have never allowed me to feel sorry for myself,” Pring told Bianchi. “I am who I am because of the hard work I put into everything I do, from schoolwork to sports. There is only one me and I have to strive to be the best me that I can be.”
